Forgiving Self

Forgiving ourselves is something that we often don’t consider. Perhaps we hold ourselves to a higher standard than we hold others and believe that we must pay a life-long price for the wrongs we have done. Since God forgives, we should forgive ourselves. Intentionally releasing what we hold against ourselves leads to healing and living the abundant life God intends for us.

NOTICE: If you have been the victim of a traumatic event or abuse, please consult with a trained professional who can help you process your trauma and help you determine if you are ready to proceed with these forgiveness activities.

   John 3:16-17 (NRSV)
16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
17 “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
Answer the following questions:
  • In light of verse 17, why is it wrong to condemn ourselves?
Romans 8:1-2 (The Voice)
1Therefore, now no condemnation awaits those who are living in Jesus the Anointed, the Liberating King, 2 because when you live in the Anointed One, Jesus, a new law takes effect. The law of the Spirit of life breathes into you and liberates you from the law of sin and death.
  • How would failure to forgive oneself run contrary to the truth stated here?
  • What do these verses mean for my life?
